Adventure Camp – No Kids Left Inside
As humans, we are hardwired to crave adventure and excitement. That thrill we get from experiences that make our hearts race, things that are entirely new and can be enjoyed again and again by sharing those experiences.
Adventures are important and kids, (in particular), need to experience adventure in their play. During outdoor play, children are in charge, they can instinctively make decisions and determine the levels of risk they want to take physically, emotionally, and socially.
Adventures help you feel better on the inside and outside, while providing tons of new experiences. At adventure camp your kids will gain new skills and knowledge, which they can put to good use later in life. They will have the opportunity to make friends, socialise, get their hands dirty and have something really cool to tell their family when they come home.
“No child ever remembers their best day of television”
Today’s culture is taking outdoor play away from our kids through excessive TV and computer use, unsafe neighbourhoods, busy lifestyles, and academic standards. As parents, it can be hard to find the time to take your children to a skate park, a local playground or simply on a walk to enjoy the fresh air. Yet the importance of these activities is overlooked.
Outdoor play enables kids to learn about the world! does a stick stand up in the sand, how does ice feel and how do leaves sound underneath my feet? How can I get my bike to move faster? how does mud feel or the sand between my toes? Do butterflies and birds need to learn how to fly, or can they just do it?
Outside, children can learn science, math, geology, gardening, geography, construction, learn the different seasons and all about the local weather. Not only do they get insight into the fundamentals and basic information about how the world works, but they’re also more likely to remember what they learned because it was fun.
What are some of the benefits of being outdoors?
Health:
There is something essentially healthy about being outside, children get to enjoy their natural environment, not to mention it encourages exercise, fresh air and it’s gives kids the opportunity to be less contained than they are by the four walls of their classroom.
Children who engage in a lot more physical activity throughout their school years tend to be more energetic with activities at home, while children who have experiences that lack physical activity start to engage in more sedentary behaviours, such as watching TV and sitting in front of a computer or tablet (Dale, Corbin & Dale 2000)
Outdoor play, allows kids to be kids:
What do you remember from being a child? Do you remember sitting in front of a computer, phone or TV or do you remember using the open space to fulfill your basic childhood needs? Things like running jumping, climbing up trees, swimming, racing, yelling, hiding and making a lot of mess… after all that is what childhood is all about.
Today, kid’s lives are more and more contained by small apartments, demanding schedules and high academic expectations, while us as parents are controlled by needing to work harder and harder to support our family. All of these factors give our children fewer and fewer opportunities to just be kids.
This is what Adventure camp is all about. We provide your kids with a fun outdoor experience in an environment that helps to fulfill their basic needs for freedom, experimentation, risk-taking, and adventure. It’s a place for them to just be themselves.
We foster and encourage different kinds of play, including:
Constructive play: where the kids can perform and control every aspect of it. We use elements like sand, water and parklands where the kids can build rafts, construct catapults and use their own initiative to solve situational problems. Skills that can be applied to every aspect of life.
Social play:
We place the kids into small groups where they need to work together to make it through the activities and challenges. This gives them the opportunity to develop basic social skills, social competencies and make new friends by playing and troubleshooting together.
Sociodramatic play:
Here, the kids get the chance to act out imaginary situations and stories to tie their adventure together. Each group gets the opportunity to adapt, reconfigure and use their imagination to imprint their own meaning to each adventure.
Kids need the opportunity to explore the unknown, the unpredictable and really get the chance to experience the wonder of nature.
So don’t wait any longer, BOOK NOW for one of our holiday camps and get your kids outdoors to experience an adventure.
