Get active physically, and engaged mentally in the great outdoors. Feel the joy of movement & play. Three full days unplugged. Kids rediscover creativity and the real world around them. Challenges designed to stretch comfort zones and build genuine self-belief through achievement. Team-based activities that forge new friendships and teach kids how to work together. We believe school holidays should be spent outside, active and with friends. Adventure Camp is a 3-day outdoor holiday program for kids aged 6–12, packed with team challenges, games, exploration and unforgettable experiences designed to build confidence, independence and new friendships. Think "The Amazing Race meets Survivor" - but for Kids. SO WHAT HAPPENS ON AN ADVENTURE CAMP? Adventure Camp isn't just a collection of activities — the entire three days is one big "gamified" adventure. Kids are split into small teams, create their own team name and war cry, and earn points throughout camp by taking on challenges, solving problems and working together. DAY 1 — The Adventure Begins Meet your team, create your team identity and let the games begin! Kids take on four scored challenges throughout the day, with activities ranging from shelter and bridge building to team games, beach challenges, puzzles and more. There's also plenty of free play, games and time to make new friends between challenges. DAY 2 — The Competition Heats Up Four more scored challenges give teams the chance to earn points, work together and climb the leaderboard. Every camp is different, with a mix of physical challenges, problem-solving, outdoor adventures and team games designed to keep everyone involved. DAY 3 — Mass Games Showdown Everything comes together for our biggest day of mass games & challenges! Teams take on each other in the Ultimate Adventure Relay, crack the final Codebreaker Challenge, battle it out in the War Cry Competition. Then, with three days of points on the line, it's time to see if all that hard work pays off... The Adventure Camp Prize Auction This is what they've been earning those points for! Teams use their points to bid for prizes in our legendary Adventure Camp Auction — but points aren't everything... strategy is key!  THREE DAYS. ONE GIANT ADVENTURE. Please note that Adventure Camp does not have a full-time staff, and as such we may take up to 3 business days to get back to your enquiry either by phone or email. This will be taken into account when the groups are allocated - we have always been able to put children into a group with at least 1 friend. At each camp we split the kids into groups of approximately 15 - and within this split, we try to get an even spread of male to females and take into account age as well. We do this to ensure we have great group dynamics and no kids are placed within groups that are too different (i. e. one group of kids with all 11 and 12 yr olds and then one 7 year old or a group with all girls and just one boy). We also do this so the groups are as evenly matched as possible across the different games / challenges. With this in mind, we do not generally place large groups of friends together in the same group - we have tried this many times and it often leads to that group either not engaging with the rest of the team, or becoming exclusive within the team. It also tends to make things more challenging for the instructor to manage the whole group . One of the key aims of our program is to help the kids to learn great social skills - this includes meeting new people, and making new friends. They may not be placed with all their friends who are attending this camp. We know from experience that this may be uncomfortable for your child for the first few hours HOWEVER they soon will make new friends and a great bond develops between their group members. Throughout the camp there are a number of times when groups come together or kids get to choose their activities and be with all their friends. It depends on the reason - each situation is case by case and worked out with the camp leader and group instructors. Changing groups is not as simple as it sounds - as such, we do not change groups mid camp based solely on requests to be with different friends (all kids will be with at least one friend from the sign up process). If all the groups are full, we cannot add additional kids as we have instructor / child safety ratios to work with. Often changing groups means that another child will have to swap also - which is not always possible (if their are no volunteers, it's not fair of us to move another child at random). If a child is noticeably not engaging with their group, the instructors will always do their best to get them engaged, whether by helping them make more friends or involving them more in the activities. A group change will always be considered if a child is struggling or not engaging. We ask that all parents ensure sun cream has been applied to your... --- ### About > Our camps will help kids to build confidence, develop initiative, increase creativity, make new friends and above all, have FUN! - Published: 2024-01-26 - Modified: 2024-05-29 - URL: https://adventurecamp.com.au/about/ About Adventure Camp Check out our upcoming camps and school holiday programsABOUTKids learn through adventure and the best are had outdoors - this is the guiding philosophy of Adventure Camp, and all the programs we develop. We started our school holiday camps firstly at Chowder Bay, Mosman in 2016. We started this simply because we couldn't find a holiday program for our own kids that really fit with what we wanted. No Screens. Fun. Outdoors. Making New Friends. Basically, we wanted our kids to experience outdoor play the way we did. Ok, it's not going to be quite the same (no more riding your bike to 10 different houses to see who is home), but we try and keep our programs pretty close - with activities that fire the imagination, keep kids active and improve their social skills and confidence. Since starting, our original program, Adventure Camp, has expanded to new locations at Northbridge, Balmoral, Greenwich, Cockatoo Island and most recently, North Head, Manly. We've also developed new programs - like Adventure Pro (for kids who have grown out of our original camps), and Adventure Island (for parents who want to join in). Through all our programs, we keep coming back to that simple goal - No Kids Left Inside. As Mark Twain said: “Throw off the bow lines, sail away from safe harbour, catch the trade winds in your sails, explore, dream discover”. Let your kids experience this at adventure Camp! Why Kids learn so well outsideWe know that recent scientific studies have exposed the benefit — even necessity — of spending time outdoors. Most of these studies agree that kids who play outside are smarter, happier, more attentive and less anxious than kids who spend more time indoors. While it’s unclear how exactly the cognitive functioning and mood improvements occur, science has proven what all parents instinctively know: nature is good for children’s minds. Living in a city, busy with work and activities, it can be hard to find the space to let kids explore nature or find the time to do it with them. School holidays camps are great solutions for kids to learn stuff, make new friends and get looked after while you’re at work. As parents we want our kids to be able to gain great life skills and learn to feel safe and have fun outdoors. That’s why we started Adventure Camp. Our dedicated teamEach Adventure Camp is run by highly experienced staff and instructors - that often work with children on a daily basis. All staff hold a minimum current First Aid certificate and have completed a ‘Working with Children’ check. Initiative based activities are built around team building and problem solving and have one instructor for a maximum of 15 kids. For activities such as rafting, snorkeling, or swimming there is a minimum of one instructor per 10 kids. For specialist activities, such as sailing at Northbridge, we have sailing instructors and use different safety ratios that are appropriate to that activity.... --- ### Camp Calendar > Upcoming school holiday adventure camps in the North Shore. Adventure Camp was born with a simple goal - to leave no kids inside. Adventure Camp programs are built around challenging outdoor and problem solving activities. These will teach your kids to appreciate diversification in one another’s personalities and skill sets. They will learn leadership skills and discover how to understand risk, make safe decisions and (most of all) have fun outdoors. When learned in an outdoor setting, these core skills have been proven in kids to build confidence and responsibility. They also promote creativity and imagination. During each camp, kids will be placed into groups and earn points for each activity. Some activities will see them race other teams or race the clock to solve a particular challenge. At the end of our program, groups will get to use their points to bid for their prizes in the "Adventure Camp Auction". During the camp, your kids will partake in land and water activities and initiatives. The day is generally broken up into four separate periods with plenty of breaks plus time for lunch, morning & afternoon tea. WHAT WILL YOUR KIDSNEXT ADVENTURE BE? The best recipe to ensure our kids get everything they need is a healthy balance of everything. This includes time outdoors. There are so many benefits of outdoor play, from better health, more independence, developing better social skills and learning to work as a team. Outdoor play engages all the senses, it encourages children (particularly young ones) to exercise their body and mind. It elevates mood, encourages exploration, creativity and cuts down sedentary time. Ultimately, being able to play outdoors helps kids grow into balanced, healthy and more resilient adults. In the midst of a busy schedule of school, homework, after school activities and screen time, it is super important for kids to get time to play outside. Throughout this article, we want to share with you Adventure camp's top benefits kids can reap from playing outdoors. Facilitates ongoing learning: By now, you all know how much we love the outdoors! and we believe outdoor play is a brilliant way to enhance a child's ability to learn. The outdoor environment provides a different learning space and playing in groups, like they do at Adventure Camp, can help kids to learn essential life lessons and skills that can't be attained through classroom learning alone. Things like; their ability to problem solve and ways to acquire new info quite regularly. Children begin to realise that learning is more of a continuous process, rather than just something they need to do in a classroom. Learning is Fun! Promotes a love of Nature & develops curiosity: Nature is wonderful and curious, it is also vital to every living thing. So educating kids on just how precious our environment is, is actually super important. Playing outside, puts you in close contact with this wonderous environment we live in and the more time you spend in nature, the more you are going to love it. Kids get so curious, they see new things, experience different smells and sensations, next their imagination begins to fire. Facilitating love and respect for nature at a young age is crucial to helping our environment last. You can even take your kids on nature trips and teach them about the local wildlife. Even the smallest things can amaze children and we love to see how the open space and lack of constraints can spark a child's imagination. From playing in the sand, to building a nature shelter, outdoor time can help to build a curious mind. Improves attention span and overall health: Outdoor play is considered recreation and unlike in the classroom, spending time in nature actually helps to improve a child's concentration (particularly in those affected with attention deficit disorders). Kids tend to put more effort into things like winning at sport than they want do with their homework. Participating in sport actually requires a lot of concentration to focus on what your are doing. Playing outdoors has even shown to improve performance at school. Outdoor games are an excellent source... --- ### Why Adventure Camp is great for Growth & Development - Published: 2023-03-01 - Modified: 2024-05-23 - URL: https://adventurecamp.com.au/why-adventure-camp-is-great-for-growth-development/ - Categories: Camp News As kids grow through primary school (kindergarten to pre-teens), you can expect to see a multitude of changes. From their interests, physical appearance, to their favourite activities and their ability to learn and thrive. They will start to become more involved in activities like sports and creative arts. As they progress through this age, kids will also start to really value friendships. At Adventure camp, we design activities that not only provide adventure, but those that also help to promote kid's growth and development. So what are the major developmental areas and what can my kids learn from Adventure Camp? The four major developmental areas are: motor development (both gross and fine motor skills), cognitive development, emotional development and social development. Our activities are designed to get kids outdoors, provide them with excitement and adventure and teach them skills that they can apply to other areas of their life. Motor Development/ fine motor skills: for the most part, the learning of gross motor skills occurs in early development (things like walking and running). Their balance, agility and coordination improve as they grow, particularly between the ages of 7-12. Throughout the 3-days at camp, the groups are always active. We include activities like shelter and raft building (hand-eye coordination), Stand-up paddle boarding (balance and coordination), initiatives games like leaky pipe and toxic crossing, all of which test their gross and fine motor skills to complete. Cognitive Development: Cognitive development refers to things such as thinking, memory, reasoning and planning. Each group at camp, are set up with activities to complete and problems to solve. Our initiatives games really target kids cognitive ability, while helping them to practice their reasoning skills and problem solving. Our code breaker challenge tests things like memory, team work and forward thinking. Emotional Development: Young people are busy working out who they are and where they fit in, so emotional development plays a very central role in self-discovery. Kids want to know more about themselves and whilst at camp, they get the chance to try new things, make new friends and really learn more about what they are good at, what skills they can learn easily and how to be a part of a team. Each activity requires effective communication and working together as a group. Facilitating positive relationships is an important foundation for a child's wellbeing. Social Development: When children are young, they don't instinctively know how to share, collaborate, compromise or resolve conflicts. All of these skills need to be learned. This learning takes place from the early stages, all the way through to adult hood. Placing kids into groups allows them to bond and socialise over new and exciting experiences. They learn how different people communicate and the importance of both verbal and non-verbal communication. We get each group to come up with a team "War-Cry", they create, learn and showcase their teams war cry at the end of camp. It is super cool to see everyone get involved and how creative they can... --- ### Simple Outdoor Activities you can enjoy with your kids this term - Published: 2023-02-28 - Modified: 2024-05-23 - URL: https://adventurecamp.com.au/simple-outdoor-activities-you-can-enjoy-with-your-kids-this-term/ - Categories: Camp News There is something about the outdoors that is really magical for children. You don't have to plan anything elaborate, children are pretty good at making up their own games and exploring their surrounds, although it can be handy to have a few spare ideas up your sleeve. Throughout this blog, we will be discussing some pretty simple outdoor activities you can enjoy with your kids this term. Hiking: Hiking is such a fantastic activity that both kids and parents can enjoy. It allows you to explore nature and get some exercise at the same time. Better yet, it can be done at any time of the year. Just think how much your kids will love exploring new locations, finding different types of wildlife and trees, and I bet they can come up with a pretty good story along the way. As a plus, this is really cost effective, as all you need is a good pair of walking shoes and you’re good to go. Golf: Surprising right? When most people think about Golf, children don’t really enter your mind, although it can really help kids to develop coordination and concentration. Golf not for you? Why not try mini golf or Putt Putt, this is something that the entire family can enjoy. Biking/ Cycling: Biking is another fantastic outdoor activity; it’s a fabulous way to get exercise while also spending time together. The kids will love riding their bikes and I am sure us parents will appreciate the chance to get some fresh air (and a bit of exercise). Don’t have a bike? No dramas, from tandem bikes, road bikes, mountain bikes and electric, there is such a wide range to hire across various locations in Sydney. Swimming/ Visiting a water park: This is super fun on a really hot day, and let’s face it, we have had so many of those lately and being in the water, no matter what your age, is good for the soul. Being in the water has so many benefits, not to mention it is such a great form of physical activity. Check out our blog on the “6 surprising benefits of water play” Camping: Camping is a great way to spend time with your kids in nature, and it is such a great bonding experience. The kids will love sleeping under the stars and roasting marshmallows over the campfire. You can teach your kids how to pitch a tent, how to cook food over the hot coals of the fire and share campfire stories. Plus, it is a great opportunity to disconnect from technology and spend some quality time as a family. Ride the ferry for a day: Being a tourist in your own town and riding the ferry is such... --- ### Why every child can benefit from an Adventure these School Holidays - Published: 2023-02-20 - Modified: 2024-05-23 - URL: https://adventurecamp.com.au/why-every-child-can-benefit-from-an-adventure-these-school-holidays/ - Categories: Camp News The school holidays can be an exciting time for kids, it is a time where there is no homework and kids really have the opportunity to have new experiences and let their hair down. At Adventure Camp, we are all about the outdoors and providing kids with new and exciting adventures with no screens in sight. Throughout this blog, we have listed a few reasons why your kids can benefit from coming on an Adventure with us these school holidays. Adventure Camp is great for building social skills: Spending a few days on one of our camps is great for meeting new people and improving both social and communication skills. Kids love to make new friends and the social skills they learn from interacting with new people will put them in good stead for later in life when communication is key to surviving every day life. If your kids are a little nervous around new people, we do our best to group them with at least someone that they are familiar with, that way they can make some new friends together. The first part of day one is every group learning about one another, knowing each other's names, interests, diversities and skills. Our group leaders are also excellent at introducing the kids to each other and making sure everyone feels welcome. We teach things that they won't learn at school: Kids are constantly learning and it is great to learn more than what an academic education can provide. We design our activities around the many fun ways to be outdoors and we like to make sure that the kids learn at least one basic adventure skill per activity. Things like problem solving, how to use a compass, tying a basic knot, raft building skills or securing a shelter. Even first aid, brail or Morse code, how to balance on uneasy surfaces or how to sail a boat. Our adventurers then get to use the skills they have learnt on day 3 for our Adventure Relay. At Adventure Camp, the kids really get to explore, experience the outdoors and socialise. Kids need a break too: As an adult, we often think that kids have such an easy life, most of us can look on our own childhoods and think just how simple and fun it was. But kids, just like us can be so over-scheduled and they need a break from things like school work, homework and all the activities in between. They need time to relax, wind down and have a bit of fun. Rather than spending time in front of the TV or playing video games, we offer your kids a place where they can enjoy exploring and trying things they have never done before. Besides, they will have a great story to tell their classmates when they return to school. Can help to alleviate stress and anxiety: Young people can often have quite a lot of pressures or anxieties that we cannot truly understand, our adult reasoning ability... --- ### Turn life into an Adventure with your kids - Published: 2022-12-20 - Modified: 2024-05-23 - URL: https://adventurecamp.com.au/turn-life-into-an-adventure-with-your-kids/ - Categories: Camp News Want to introduce more adventure into your kids lives? Well our school holiday camps have just what you need to facilitate more outdoor play, get your kids to use their imagination and to discover more about their surroundings. Increasing your kid's exposure to adventure is actually easier than you think and you can even get the whole family involved. One of the easiest ways to incorporate adventure into our kids lives is to literally create it out of everyday experiences. The next time you are walking to school or to the bus stop, look at the trees growing on your street, learn the history of your local area, tell your kids a story and let them create their own adventure along the way. If you demonstrate curiosity, your children will follow suit. After all, adventure can be found anywhere... From birth, kids learn new skills pretty rapidly, as well as the confidence to use them. Children need to trust their own capabilities in order to thrive, in addition to how to rebound from failures. As our kids grow older, they need a sense of autonomy and individuality, and exposing your kids to adventure is one of the most fun ways to achieve that. So, does that mean we need to be doing the things our kids want more often? Absolutely not. You can make the fun and interesting things you want to do as a parent, become the new normal for your kids. Don't forget, kids are actually very portable... If you want to go for a hike, take your kids along, it may take 3 hours to hike 1 kilometre, and you can guarantee that someone is bound to have a meltdown from the farthest point from home. But the more you do it, like anything, the easier it gets and before long, your kids will be bugging you for the next outdoor adventure. Each trip or outing is not going to be perfect, or even enjoyable for everyone involved. Some days there will be crying and screaming and your kids will run off and not want to participate. Don't let that stop you! This also happens when you are at home. Just have patience, going on adventure outings with kids can take time, but take a breath and enjoy watching your kids explore their natural curiosities. Let them try new things Sometimes it can be pretty hard to watch your kids trying new things, particularly when there is even the slightest chance that they could get hurt or injured. A little tip we like to give when it comes to encouraging your kids to be more adventurous is "think like a lifeguard". A lifeguard will observe swimmers attentively, but they only intervene when necessary. Allowing kids to explore and play, with limited interference, helps us as parents, to become more of a supportive partner in our children's play, rather than directive. This will allow them the chance to truly shine. They get more freedom to explore and discover... --- ### Why socialising is so good for our Kids - Published: 2022-11-24 - Modified: 2024-05-23 - URL: https://adventurecamp.com.au/why-socialising-is-so-good-for-our-kids/ - Categories: Camp News Socialising has so many benefits, and is potentially one of the most important life skills a kid can learn. Developing social skills, helps our kids be more self confident and autonomous later in life. At Adventure Camp, we challenge kids socially and place them in groups that are mixed with age, gender, friends and people they have never met before. Throughout this blog, we are going to share a few reasons, why we think socialising is so important for our kids... Builds confidence and independence: Socialising with others, in particular, other kids, helps to build confidence around other people and can actually make children less anxious to be outside their comfort zone. Engaging in social interactions will help children to develop self-esteem and even make engaging in new social settings less scary. Which is a particularly important skill when starting school or being placed in a new class. Having more confidence also means that your child(ren) will be more likely to take "healthy" risks, such as talking to new kids in class or trying something new. Encourages empathy and acceptance of others: Being socially interactive, introduces your kids to new concepts and ideas, and opens their eyes to the many differences in how people think and communicate. This will also help them to develop empathy. Empathy is super important as it helps children to be kind and caring of others. They learn that other people have feelings, desires and needs just like they do. If they don't like how someone else is treating them, they can start to realise and identify that if they treat others that same way, the other person is likely to get upset or feel hurt. When we (as adults) socialise with others of varying abilities and disabilities, we learn to accept everyone as they are right! Kids are the same, they begin to accept that everyone being different is okay and they learn to adapt play so that everyone can join in. Communication skills: Being social, allows kids to communicate with others outside of their family and will help them to better understand social cues and how to listen and understand others. The ability to communicate comes in many forms, such as; verbal, non-verbal, facial expression and body language. Understanding and developing a variety of communication skills will help our kids as they go through different stages of their lives. Sharing: Being egocentric and a little self-centred is normal behaviour for young children, in their minds, the world revolves around what they can see, not what they can't see or what they can imagine. Socialising teaches kids to share and be less egocentric. Being around others encourages kids to talk, share knowledge, thoughts, resources and insights. And by sharing their stories, kids begin to grasp the concept of others. Friends: to wrap up, socialising is the most critical aspect to help our kids make new friends and we all know just how important friends are. Friends help to increase a kids vocabulary, create meaningful connections,... --- ### How to prepare for Adventure Camp - Published: 2022-11-22 - Modified: 2024-05-23 - URL: https://adventurecamp.com.au/how-to-prepare-for-adventure-camp/ - Categories: Camp News Quite often, in the lead up to camp, we have quite a few questions from parents that we thought we could shed some light on. We send all our attendees a preparation email in the days leading up to camp so that your kids have everything they need to have the best possible experience. If this is your first Adventure Camp, this guide will help you prepare, if you are a regular, this will be a helpful reminder. What to Bring to Adventure Camp: Hat: kids will be asked to wear a hat whenever they are outdoors (water sports are an exception) Sunscreen: We provide plenty of sun cream per group, and get kids to reapply every 2 hours. Although if you require a special kind of sun cream- due to any allergies, it is best to bring your own. Rash Vest: We provide Adventure Camp Rashies that all kids will be wearing throughout all of out water activities, although it is always great to have a spare. Swimmers: (swimwear is not required for our winter camps) Change of clothes: We have various water activities throughout the camp and there are times when the weather can get a little damp, so having a spare change of clothes each day is great. Raincoat / poncho: This is only really necessary if it is forecast to rain. (Want to know what happens in the event of rain? Read on... . ) Towel: The kids will get wet, so a towel is definitely the first thing to pack Lunch, water bottle and snacks: The kids are active and outside all day, so a big healthy lunch, morning and afternoon snacks are highly recommended. There will be taps and bubblers around to refill any water bottles if needed. Shoes (that can get wet/muddy/dirty) or Water Shoes: ideally bring a spare pair, plus extra socks. And finally, a Backpack: after all the kids are going to need something to carry all of this in. We carry our bags with us most of the day, so a bag they can carry comfortably is recommended. PLEASE LABEL EVERYTHING... . What not to bring: Nuts or nut based foods: this helps us cater for any kids with allergies Devices: this is a tech free camp, we don’t want kids bringing tablets, mobiles or any other electronic devices. If your child must have a phone to contact you, please ask them to hand it to their group leader and ask for it when required. We do not accept bullying or anti-sociable behaviour. We will provide a warning to a child and if they continue we will ask you to take your child home. What happens if it rains? If there is a little rain, all of our outdoor activities will continue as normal, after all this is Adventure Camp! In the event of heavy rain or extreme weather, we do have back up plans for indoor and undercover activities. So, the camps will still go ahead as normal. What... --- ### Being outdoors this winter, is actually really good for you - Published: 2022-05-25 - Modified: 2024-05-23 - URL: https://adventurecamp.com.au/being-outdoors-this-winter-is-actually-really-good-for-you/ - Categories: Camp News The colder weather has always been notorious for people instinctively staying indoors, but despite the doom and gloom of winter, the colder weather may actually be really good for you... and it is super great for our kids. We all know the benefits of being outside. It boosts the immune system which, in turn, builds up kids natural resistances. When children come into contact with dirt, animals and bacteria during outdoor play, they are helping to reduce the risk of allergies, and even autoimmune disease as they grow. Staying inside over the winter decreases the amount of vitamin D we get, and too little sunlight can be stressful. It effects our emotional and physical wellbeing, making us vulnerable to fatigue. Here are some reasons to get your kids outdoors and into Adventure Camp these winter holidays; It'll lift your mood: Realistically, we know that serotonin levels in the brain (our most important feel-good chemicals) are lowest in winter, and the darker months are well known for affecting our mood. Exposing yourself to the sun's rays is one of the best remedies to beat the winter blues. Spending time outdoors in the winter time will help us get the light we need for energy, alertness, mood and cognitive function. it charges up your immune system: Exercise, even walking out in the colder weather, may help to keep illnesses at bay as it helps to flush bacteria out of your airway and lungs. Research shows that spending time in nature reduces your stress hormones and increases anti-cancer proteins in the body. You get some much needed fresh air: A lot of people work hard to make their home as free from toxins as possible, with indoor plants and skipping the toxic cleaners. Although there are still a multitude of pollutants inside that decrease our ability to breath in the fresh stuff. Things like electronics, appliances in your kitchen and even some furniture. Getting outdoors gives you a break from indoor air and it is the best air that we can breath, (and far less polluted), particularly if you seek out natural areas that are filled with plant life. Being cooped up inside we are more likely to catch germs by sharing close spaces with others, increasing our risk of colds and flu's. Get's you moving: the colder weather generally means less time outdoors, we are more likely to skip the walk through the park to school or to catch transportation. (It is amazing how much additional time outdoors these simple activities create for us). There is nothing like putting on that extra coat and taking your kids out for a walk, exercise of any form boosts your mood, immunity and decreases your risk of infection. Reduces stress: take the time this winter to connect with the wonders of nature, after all, we know how much being outdoors can reduce your stress levels (even in kids). It inspires your kids: We love the outdoors and kids who spend more time outdoors are known... --- ### Snorkelling - Published: 2022-05-16 - Modified: 2024-05-23 - URL: https://adventurecamp.com.au/snorkelling/ - Categories: Camp News Snorkelling is a popular hobby where you float along the surface of the ocean while exploring the life underneath. Not only is it great for your physical and mental health, it is also quite relaxing and easy to do (no experience required). At Adventure Camp, we love taking the kids snorkelling, and below we are going to share with you a few of the reasons why; Snorkelling is a fun and relaxing way to enjoy the ocean: as kids get older they become more curious and as they get more interested in the underwater environment, snorkelling can be the perfect way to get to know our beautiful ocean. You can swim with the sea life, marvel at all the plants (that ONLY exist underwater) and discover all of these incredible little worlds underwater. Every time you go snorkelling, there is something new to discover and as bonus, it is also incredibly quiet and peaceful. Snorkelling allows you to go at your own pace and is the perfect way to de-stress from the craziness of life on the land. So, your whole body will enjoy the workout. Snorkelling is also great for your heart and joints, building cardiovascular strength and assisting to ease stiffness while increasing mobility in a low impact environment. Snorkelling lets you discover the underwater world: No more getting the kids to watch documentaries on TV, why not let them discover it first hand? Snorkelling gets you up close and personal with the best that the ocean has to offer - fish, coral, shells and tons of sea creatures. Kids can become the narrators of their very own underwater discovery journey. Now that school is back again, and we've all started back at the daily grind, between homework and school activities, it can be hard to keep your kids enjoying time outdoors. Extra curricular activities like team sports, dance, tennis etc can be fantastic for a kids wellbeing, but children still need time for free play, to be able to use their imagination and to do the things they love. We have a few fun ideas on what you could do with your kids after school to get them outdoors and away from screens: Go for a walk: if you are lucky enough to have some wonderful nature walks near your home, why not use them? This is something that you can do as a whole family, take in the sights, admire the trees and collect some sticks and rocks along the way. Play some outdoor games: like tag or backyard football. Go to a skatepark: you can ride a bike, skateboard, scooter or even roller skates. Skate parks are a fantastic place where kids can meet other kids, build confidence and learn new skills Build or create something: whether that be using recycled materials or things from the backyard- build a fort, or make a boat from plastic water bottles etc. Let them be creative. Play with siblings or friends Play ball games: like handball, basketball, football or even soccer with your dog. Not only are these games great for getting your kids outdoors, they are also awesome for hand eye and hand foot coordination. Do a Jigsaw puzzle: even though we love all things outdoors, puzzles are great for a child's mind. Pick a hard one. Puzzles are great for stimulating a child's mind while enhancing their creativity, they promote problem solving and you get such a great sense of achievement from completing a complex puzzle. This is another activity the whole family can get involved in. Draw pictures in the sand at the beach: or build a sandcastle Stare at the clouds and see what amazing forms they take: there is nothing quite like lying outside and watching the clouds change shape, they even draw you pictures. Get your kids to make a list of the shapes they saw. Play under a sprinkler or build a slip'n'side: you can do this with a trap, some camping pegs, a hose and a lot of detergent. There are so many ways that you can get your kids to enjoy time outdoors after school, here are a few more: make daisy chains with wildflowers plant a tree go for a family bike ride build a backyard obstacle course and maybe get your Dog involved feed some ducks at a pond build and walk on some tin can stilts skipping There are an ever growing number of things to do outdoors and numerous ways to hone in on your kids... --- ### Why playing team sports is so good for kids - Published: 2022-04-07 - Modified: 2024-05-23 - URL: https://adventurecamp.com.au/why-playing-team-sports-is-so-good-for-kids/ - Categories: Camp News Playing sport is not just good for kids' physical wellbeing, it is great for their minds too. At Adventure Camp, we are all about group activities and getting children to work together as a team. Throughout this blog, we are going to explore the many benefits kids can get from playing team sports. Playing in a team encourages things like cooperation, sharing, respect, resilience and goal setting. Joining a sport allows kids to feel a sense of community, provides them with a fantastic social outlet and gives them an opportunity to make lasting friendships. Here are some awesome reasons why we think team sports are so great for kids: It's excellent for the physical body: playing sport is great exercise and helps to make physical activity a habit, it is great for mobility and gets kids outdoors. Not to mention, sport helps to improve cardiovascular health, lung function and bone/muscle development. It boasts the 5 C's: Competence, confidence, connections, character and creativity. Competence: team sports develop your ability, increase skills and creates positivity around your kids ability to use those skills both on the field and in everyday life. Confidence: when kids play sport, they learn and see improvements in their abilities and start to believe that they can start to try more things and contribute as part of a team. Besides, when you practice skills and get better at them, that's got to be a massive confidence booster. Connections: playing a team sport provides the opportunity to meet a lot of people and make new friends. The experiences kids have and the challenges they overcome create a bond like no other and one that your kids will love being a part of. Character: being part of a team teaches kids character, they learn a sense of respect for other team mates, coaches and themselves. In addition to respect for their own bodies, for what it can do and how they can use and fuel them. Creativity: the more they learn about the sport they play and the rules of how to play, kids start to become more creative in how they solve problems on the field or court and how to change certain plays. Sport creates happier kids: According to scientific studies, when kids exercise they are happier, the same thing happens when we (as adults) exercise, our body releases endorphins. These naturally occurring chemicals improve our mood, boosts self-esteem, relives feelings of anxiety & depression and even helps us to sleep better. which leads to happier, positive and more relaxed kids, what more could you want? Most parents would know that playing sport is physically beneficial for kids, but what is less talked about is the immense mental, emotional and social benefits that playing in a team sport can offer your child. The best part is, it doesn't even matter what sport they play or their skill level. Kids learn important values: like discipline, respect (for both others and coaches), team sports can also teach patience. Better students:... --- ### Stand Up Paddle Boarding - Published: 2022-04-04 - Modified: 2024-05-23 - URL: https://adventurecamp.com.au/stand-up-paddle-boarding/ - Categories: Camp News Stand Up Paddle boarding (SUP) has become such a popular sport around the world and there are so many reasons why. The most common being because it is so easy to learn, it's for all fitness levels and capabilities, all ages and it is super fun for everyone. Standing upright on a paddleboard lets you look down into the water and really connect with the nature around you, it is a great way to spend time with your family outdoors, a great way to get plenty of fresh air and sunlight in addition to full body exercise. Why is Stand Up Paddle Boarding so good for kids? Exercise: Stand up paddle boarding is an excellent workout, few activities provide such an extensive variety. It promotes balance, increases strength in your arms, legs and core and it can also improve endurance. At the same time, it is also fairly low-intensity and a fun thing to do. It is great for mental health: in this day and age, kids can get just as stressed out as us. Being outside amongst nature is undeniably important for our mental health and we all know how great the water is for reducing stress. Balancing and paddling at the same time takes focus, this focus can help to reduce the amount of time they spend worrying about other things. When kids use their stored up energy, they sleep better and experience less anxiety. Fresh air: Getting your kids into SUP will see them having fun, get them away from screen time and enjoying the great outdoors. Whilst on a board, the fresh air cleans kids lungs, getting rid of pollutants like car fumes and dust. Each breath of fresh air helps kids brains get clarity, and clean air and sunshine are awesome at battling Vitamin D deficiencies. FUN FACT: did you know that every hour of paddling and breathing fresh air reinforces children's eyesight, how cool is that. Great for overall health: paddling gets the heart rate up and the faster your heart beats the more oxygen you get through the body. The more oxygen you get the more it kicks your metabolism into gear and an effective metabolism improves heart muscle and overall heart health. Besides, kids have a short attention span and SUP is a great alternative to indoor cardio. Above all Paddle boarding is Fun: SUP is an excellent way for kids to bond with each other and have fun with their friends. Whilst out on the water, kids can enjoy the outdoors, converse with others, develop their social skills and make new friends. Paddle boarding is a great way to build children's confidence, they get super excited when they can stand up on their own. At Adventure Camp, we encourage the kids to practice by standing up on the boards and jumping off into the water! Kids LOVE doing this... . It is like having your own personal dock to jump off. Surfing is a surface water sport in which an individual uses a board to ride a moving wave of water. At Adventure Camp, we think surfing is an awesome way for kids to learn confidence in the water, it teaches them to negotiate breaking waves, potential dangers such as rips and currents, and they also learn to enjoy this beautiful part of nature and experience it in a fun way. Not only is surfing loads of fun, there are truck loads of other benefits, let's explore why; Surfing is a highly dynamic sport: The ocean and the waves are constantly changing and no two waves are the same. Whilst learning to surf, kids learn how to think, act and function in the current moment. Sports like tennis and footy have fixed and static playing fields with boundaries and rules. Surfing is the complete opposite, it has no fixed playing field, no fixed rules and absolutely no boundaries. No other sports have a constantly changing playing field. Boosts confidence: When you're new to surfing, paddling yourself out through the crashing waves can be pretty scary and having that little bit of fear before facing the ocean is totally natural. However, after a little practice you become more and more comfortable in the ocean and kids, especially, quickly begin to overcome their initial fears. It could be said that surfing is a useful tool for teaching kids to overcome little worries, which in turn, boosts their confidence in their day-to-day life. Plus, surfing looks super cool, so it is hard not to feel confident after a good day of surfing. Improves motor skills: Things like balance, coordination and spatial orientation, which are crucial life skills that all kids require to maintain healthy development. Surfing is such a fun and exciting way to teach these skills. Balance and coordination will help children to do more tasks independently (like ride a bike), become better at sport (with better hand-eye and foot coordination) and to build their self-esteem. Children will also become a lot more agile by getting comfortable in their own bodies. Surfing is physically demanding: And it is a great way to balance off energy. Let's face it, one hour of surfing wears kids out. It is a full body workout that combines strength and aerobic exercise. Improves swimming ability: Most people will say that they know how to swim, but there is a big difference between knowing "how to swim" and being confident in the water. When learning to surf, you develop a better feel for the water and navigating waves, which will ultimately assist with better swimming performance (both in the pool and in the ocean). See we told you surfing was an excellent way for kids (and adults) to build their confidence... --- ### Why is Problem Solving Important for Kids - Published: 2022-03-20 - Modified: 2024-05-23 - URL: https://adventurecamp.com.au/why-is-problem-solving-important-for-kids/ - Categories: Camp News At school we learn things like maths, English, science, geography and are educated on topics that enable us get jobs and to be functioning members of society. But school doesn't teach us everything, there are things that we learn by exploring our environment and surrounds. We encounter problems on a daily basis both at work and at home, to resolve these issues and move forward is like second nature for us . As parents and teachers, it is our responsibility to teach the kids in our lives the skills for critical thinking and conflict resolution. This helps them to develop and maintain relationships, excel in activities both within and outside of school and how to exercise proper self regulation skills (like anger management). For a child, being a good problem solver is an important life skill so that they are able to make good (and healthy) decisions for themselves. When children are able to solve problems on their own, they will be more confident, independent and happier adolescents and adults. Problems help build character, resilience and perseverance, they give us the opportunities to see things in a different way. Kids who lack the skills to problem solve tend to avoid trying new things, they face problems everyday and at Adventure Camp we give kids initiatives games, problems to solve and new things to try. We offer kids loads of activities such as; Stretcher Build, Toxic Crossing and Egg Rescue, Where we place a scenario in front of them and give kids the chance to attempt to solve the problem on their own. As a group they examine the problem, talk through it try to come up with a solution together. They then use these strategies when faced with a similar problem later on. Letting kids approach problems on their own first, rather than us parents running to the rescue, gives them the the confidence in their abilities to tackle different issues and when they are at school, they can use these skills in new social situations as well as apply this to their academic learning. A child with good problem solving skills will be able to use their initiative and be able to weigh up actions and consequences to guide their decisions throughout the school day, they also tend to be less daunted by new tasks. Here are a few different strategies you can use at home to teach better problem solving; Take a deep breath: The first step to teaching problem solving skills to anyone is to ensure that they are calm. When our emotions are on high, it tends to be a lot more challenging to see things rationally. Help your kids find a way to calm their mind, particularly when they are overwhelmed and their emotions are on high. Talk about it: Once your child is calm, ask them to verbalize the dilemma they are having, putting thoughts into words can help us gain perspective and make it easier to search for solutions. In fact, the mere sight and sound of water can induce a flood of neurochemicals that increase blood flow, promote wellness, increase blood flow to the brain and induce relaxation. So, no wonder playing in the water is good for kids. Let's explore a few reasons why; 1. Concentration: When kids play with water, they tend to get lost in the activity and spend longer periods of time exploring and playing. This, in turn, encourages children to focus more on any activity that will hold their attention, increasing their concentration span over time. The benefits of this spill over into the classroom, where being able to concentrate is an essential skill. 2. They learn about concepts of Science: Playing in the water allows children to experience scientific concepts hands on. Kids learn early physics through the properties of the water, things like; a) Water makes sand heavier b) Air moves water c) Water falls through space (through a pipe or sieve) d) Water takes the shape of any container it is poured into and runs downhill e) Water is liquid when it is poured and can turn solid when it is cold (frozen) f) Sometimes items float on water while others sink 3. Early mathematics skills: Playing with water is an excellent way for kids to develop essential maths skills. Things like volume and capacity, when they experience concepts like full and empty and displacement when they put objects into water. Conservation, that the amount of water stays the same when poured into a container of a different shape. Learning these skills and concepts through play really can assist formal learning. 4. Problem-solving and creativity: Developing problem solving and creativity skills is vital in todays society and are better developed when you are a child. It requires finding solutions to challenges during play and kids are required to think outside the box. A few examples of how Adventure Camp hones these skills through water play include; a) Sandcastle Wars - how to add just the right amount of water to the sand so that it can be moulded without falling apart. b) How to get water to run from one structure to another - building a water way through pipes or a moat for a sandcastle c) Raft Building - which items to use so that the raft will float and not sink d) How to make a funnel to get water from a large container into a smaller one 5. Social skills: This one comes up a lot, but there are so many elements of outdoor play that increase a child's ability to interact with others. When kids play together they often become more loud, energetic and excited, research has shown that playing with water is one activity that tends to have a more calming effect as it is so absorbing and relaxing. Even though we don't often see kids playing quietly in the water,... --- ### 10 Things every Parent should know about Adventure Camp! - Published: 2022-03-11 - Modified: 2024-03-03 - URL: https://adventurecamp.com.au/10-things-every-parent-should-know-about-adventure-camp/ - Categories: Camp News Despite the many known benefits of being outside, statistics show that the amount of time that kids get to play has been declining for decades. Did you know that research shows the average pre-schooler watches 4. 5 hours of TV each day! Let us show you why Adventure Camp is so cool for kids. Playing outdoors is healthy: let's face it, how many kids do you see actually sitting on their bums outside? Not many, there is too much to do, and so much fun to be had. Besides, it is a nice change from the four walls of the classroom. Kids learn new skills and try new things: we make every effort to include things that your kids may not have tried before, things like surfing and sailing or paddling in a kayak. We enable and teach them skills that last a life time and encourage them to try something they may not do on there own. Make new friends: At Adventure camp we divide the kids into 4 different groups that are mixed with age and gender (we do like to keep the kids age gap as close as possible , as their physical abilities will be similar and no one will get left behind). Although we do encourage everyone to nominate at least one friend that they would like to be grouped with. (no matter what age). Playing together brings joy, vitality, and resilience to relationships. Through regular play, we learn to trust one another and feel safe. We offer your kids a screen free solution and teach them about how cool it is to be outdoors: There is so much adventure to be had by being in our natural environment, so much to see, so much to learn and the outdoors is such a cool place, not to mention packed with lots of essential vitamins and minerals that can be soaked up from the sun. We get your kids active, teach them the benefits of taking initiative and show them just how cool it is to do more than sit in front of a video game. We build things just like Minecraft but the kids actually use their hands and get to see first hand just what their creation can do and we battle just like Fortnite, although the reward is so much more exciting. We even teach your kids about maths and product worth with our auction at the end of camp. Each team gains points throughout the three days and they use these points to buy prizes for their team. And did we mention the war cry, one that is unique per group, ask your kids what their war cry was when they get home from camp. Good for your kids, physical, emotional & social wellbeing: we all know the benefits of outdoor play (see our article- LINK) but doing this in a group environment makes kids happy, reduces stress levels and increases those happy hormones that we all crave. We love seeing all... --- ### Sailing - Published: 2022-03-11 - Modified: 2024-03-02 - URL: https://adventurecamp.com.au/sailing/ - Categories: Camp News Sailing is not only fun, it is one activity that packs so many life lessons. It teaches things like teamwork, engineering, history, patience and educates you all about the ocean. Which are all great reasons why every kid should learn how to sail, at Adventure Camp, we love sailing and here are some more top reasons why we think sailing is great for kids; Adventure: You know how much we love adventure, and sailing is an awesome way to plant that seed. Sailboats, for the most part are safe, but they have an element of the unknown. Outside the boat is a completely different world, a world of water, a world where we can't even stand up in or breathe in (underwater). It is kind of mind blowing when you think about it... this is a place where kids can really stretch their imagination. Knowledge of systems: a lot of trial, error and innovative changes have gone into the design of what we now know as the sail boat. An innovation that works in an intricate system that creates travel from a wind source. Learning about systems like this spikes kids curiosity, making them want to look into other systems and encourages critical thinking. It also helps them to better understand systems in their every day environment. Bonding: with technology dominating most of our lives lately, and kids spending so much of their time indoors, it is becoming increasingly difficult for kids to develop meaningful relationships. Sailing is a team sport, and it relies on everyone to make it work. The kids need to work together and they start to learn the value of teamwork. Spending time on a boat with others generates a lot of fun, laughter, easy conversation and helps kids to build friendships. Work ethic: nothing speaks louder in sailing then organization, boat maintenance and cleanliness and keeping a boat in perfect working order takes work and effort. Sailing teaches your kids work/rewards lessons where they learn that results can be achieved through physical effort, which can be a particularly valuable lesson if your child has a short attention span. Sense of direction: when you're out on the water it can be easy to lose your bearings, sailing provides many methods in which kids can learn and develop a good sense of direction. Courage and self confidence: being able to ride a push bike or swing on monkey bars is one thing, but imaging being able to steer a sailboat, or be a part of, or even captain a crew. This provides a level of confidence that other activities may struggle to match. If you are looking for an outdoor activity for your kids, that will teach them valuable lessons and unlock some of their hidden talents, why not consider Adventure Camp. Not only will we get them outdoors and away from computer screens, but we can also help them to develop new skills that will last a lifetime. --- ### Imaginative Play for Child Development - Published: 2022-03-04 - Modified: 2024-05-23 - URL: https://adventurecamp.com.au/imaginative-play-for-child-development/ - Categories: Camp News Adventure Camp is all about ditching technology and experiencing the outdoors. At our camps, kids use initiative, they learn new skills, make new friends and most importantly, have loads of fun. We encourage kids to use their imagination through a variety of initiatives games and puzzles, we help them to engage better, enhance their social skills and inspire them to try new things without fear. Why is imagination important for child development? For kids, using their imagination aids in the development of social, emotional, creative and problem solving skills. Pretending can also boost your child's self-esteem, giving them the confidence to be anything they want. There are no limits to what a kid can dream up during imaginative play and it is a great way for children to test their boundaries, learn to control impulses and experiment with social interaction. Kids can pretend to save the world, be a mythical creature or even act out scenarios they see in their everyday life. Whatever they choose to play or pretend, they are learning and developing. Here are some examples of how kids can develop their cognitive skills through using their imagination; Thinking and problem solving: imaginative play requires all kinds of creative problem-solving, like what materials around they house they can use to build a fort, or what to do when two kids want to play the same character or role. Build self confidence and develop social skills: children don't have to worry if other kids will like them when engaging in imaginative play, because let's face it, who doesn't like the dragon who is the most fierce in the land, or the prince that can slay him. As children play and pretend they explore relationships with family, friends and learn about how people interact with each other through different means of communication. They learn to interpret individuals through what fun and awesome things they can think and create. Through imaginative play, they can tackle anything their fear and are more inclined to try new things. Increases creativity: Creativity is instrumental to a child's wellbeing and can also be a stress reducer. Stimulating creativity makes kids happier. Kids learn new language skills: being imaginative when you play, particularly with others, is all about communication. Kids describe the situation with intricate detail and narrate what is happening, they imagine every inch of their situation and find the language to explain it. Maybe us parents can also learn a thing or two on how to better communicate with our kids. Encourages independence: as kids play and connect with the world around them, they begin incorporating what they have learned throughout their everyday life. Which, in turn, gives them the freedom to take risks. This is essential to them gaining independence and encourages them to think on their feet. Imaginative play is inclusive and invites everybody to join in. Kids learn new things about each other and make new friends. Here at Adventure Camp, we provide your children with a supportive, safe and inclusive... --- ### 5 Ways Your Kids Can Benefit From Being Outdoors These Holidays - Published: 2022-03-03 - Modified: 2024-05-23 - URL: https://adventurecamp.com.au/5-ways-your-kids-can-benefit-from-being-outdoors-these-holidays/ - Categories: Camp News At Adventure Camp we have built ourselves on the motto of, 'no kids left inside! ' Living in a city, busy with work and activities, it can be hard to find the space to let kids explore nature or find the time to do it with them. School holidays camps are an awesome way for kids to learn new things and make new friends. As parents we want our kids to be able to gain great life skills and learn to feel safe and have fun outdoors. That’s why we started Adventure Camp. Here are 5 ways that all kids can benefit from being outdoors these school holidays. 1. Physical Health: Research shows that children who play outside are more active and have better physical health (with lower risks of obesity ). let's face it, no kid really sits still outside. Fun Fact: there has been studies that show the more time a child spends outside, the lower their risk of short-sightedness. Even 45 minutes of outdoor play a day can make a difference (doctors suspect this is due to the higher levels of outside light). 2. Boosts the immune system: Safe exposure to sunlight increases the body's natural production on Vitamin D3 and it is no surprise that kids who are outside create more of this essential vitamin. Vitamin D3 is important for bone and muscle development and is beneficial to your overall health. At Adventure Camp we take sun protection very seriously, as balancing sun exposure is very important. 3. Cognitive skills: The benefits that the natural environment has on how a child's brain works are countless and research shows that being outdoors can lead to a range of cognitive benefits for kids including; a) Better memory b) improvement in symptoms of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder c) improved concentration d) better reasoning skills It is thought that exposure to nature plays a positive role in brain development by providing children with the opportunity to take risks, discover new things, be creative, develop a sense of wonder and engage in new tasks. 4. Psychological State: Exposure to natural environments can lead to a decreased risk for problem behaviour, reduction in anger, reduced depressive symptoms, greater autonomy and a decreased risk of problem behaviour. Kids ability to regulate their own emotions is also improved through exposure to nature. 5 - Wellbeing: Having exposure to nature can also help children's wellbeing, Studies have found that even the simple presence of nature like trees, grass and plants can help children to better cope with stress. Being outdoors is not only beneficial for our health, it is so much fun. We believe in outdoor play so much that we have designed our holiday adventures to ensure kids try something new and have awesome fun doing it. If the above reasons are not enough to get your kids outdoors these holidays, check out our article on what we want all parents to know about Adventure Camp. --- ### Adventure Camp – No Kids Left Inside - Published: 2022-02-20 - Modified: 2024-05-23 - URL: https://adventurecamp.com.au/adventure-camp-no-kids-left-inside/ - Categories: Camp News As humans, we are hardwired to crave adventure and excitement. That thrill we get from experiences that make our hearts race, things that are entirely new and can be enjoyed again and again by sharing those experiences. Adventures are important and kids, (in particular), need to experience adventure in their play. During outdoor play, children are in charge, they can instinctively make decisions and determine the levels of risk they want to take physically, emotionally, and socially. Adventures help you feel better on the inside and outside, while providing tons of new experiences. At adventure camp your kids will gain new skills and knowledge, which they can put to good use later in life. They will have the opportunity to make friends, socialise, get their hands dirty and have something really cool to tell their family when they come home. “No child ever remembers their best day of television” Today’s culture is taking outdoor play away from our kids through excessive TV and computer use, unsafe neighbourhoods, busy lifestyles, and academic standards. As parents, it can be hard to find the time to take your children to a skate park, a local playground or simply on a walk to enjoy the fresh air. Yet the importance of these activities is overlooked. Outdoor play enables kids to learn about the world! does a stick stand up in the sand, how does ice feel and how do leaves sound underneath my feet? How can I get my bike to move faster? how does mud feel or the sand between my toes? Do butterflies and birds need to learn how to fly, or can they just do it? Outside, children can learn science, math, geology, gardening, geography, construction, learn the different seasons and all about the local weather. Not only do they get insight into the fundamentals and basic information about how the world works, but they’re also more likely to remember what they learned because it was fun. What are some of the benefits of being outdoors? Health: There is something essentially healthy about being outside, children get to enjoy their natural environment, not to mention it encourages exercise, fresh air and it’s gives kids the opportunity to be less contained than they are by the four walls of their classroom. Children who engage in a lot more physical activity throughout their school years tend to be more energetic with activities at home, while children who have experiences that lack physical activity start to engage in more sedentary behaviours, such as watching TV and sitting in front of a computer or tablet (Dale, Corbin & Dale 2000) Outdoor play, allows kids to be kids: What do you remember from being a child? Do you remember sitting in front of a computer, phone or TV or do you remember using the open space to fulfill your basic childhood needs? Things like running jumping, climbing up trees, swimming, racing, yelling, hiding and making a lot of mess... after all that is what childhood is... --- --- ## Camps ### Greenwich Camp - 28th - 30th Sep, 2026 - Published: 2026-07-29 - Modified: 2026-07-30 - URL: https://adventurecamp.com.au/camp/greenwich-camp-27th-29th-jan-2026/ - Locations: Greenwich --- ### Balmain Camp - 7th - 9th Oct, 2026 > Our camps are designed around the principle of keeping kids active and engaged outdoors, and away from screens.
