Simple Outdoor Activities you can enjoy with your kids this term

There is something about the outdoors that is really magical for children. When kids are out in the fresh air and moving their bodies freely, there moods are almost always positive.

Children need a solid amount of time for active play each day and it is proven to improve their behaviour and sharpen their focus.

You don’t have to plan anything elaborate, children are pretty good at making up their own games and exploring their surrounds, although it can be handy to have a few spare ideas up your sleeve.

Throughout this blog, we will be discussing some pretty simple outdoor activities you can enjoy with your kids this term.

  1. Hiking: Hiking is such a fantastic activity that both kids and parents can enjoy. It allows you to explore nature and get some exercise at the same time. Better yet, it can be done at any time of the year. Just think how much your kids will love exploring new locations, finding different types of wildlife and trees, and I bet they can come up with a pretty good story along the way. As a plus, this is really cost effective, as all you need is a good pair of walking shoes and you’re good to go.
  2. Golf: Surprising right? When most people think about Golf, children don’t really enter your mind, although it can really help kids to develop coordination and concentration. Golf not for you? Why not try mini golf or Putt Putt, this is something that the entire family can enjoy.
  3. Biking/ Cycling: Biking is another fantastic outdoor activity; it’s a fabulous way to get exercise while also spending time together. The kids will love riding their bikes and I am sure us parents will appreciate the chance to get some fresh air (and a bit of exercise). Don’t have a bike? No dramas, from tandem bikes, road bikes, mountain bikes and electric, there is such a wide range to hire across various locations in Sydney.
  4. Swimming/ Visiting a water park: This is super fun on a really hot day, and let’s face it, we have had so many of those lately and being in the water, no matter what your age, is good for the soul. Being in the water has so many benefits, not to mention it is such a great form of physical activity. Check out our blog on the “6 surprising benefits of water play”
  5. Camping: Camping is a great way to spend time with your kids in nature, and it is such a great bonding experience. The kids will love sleeping under the stars and roasting marshmallows over the campfire. You can teach your kids how to pitch a tent, how to cook food over the hot coals of the fire and share campfire stories. Plus, it is a great opportunity to disconnect from technology and spend some quality time as a family.
  6. Ride the ferry for a day: Being a tourist in your own town and riding the ferry is such a great way to see the city. You can hop on and off the ferry throughout the day and walk around / explore the many exciting sites that Sydney has to offer. You can even head across to Adventure Camp’s favourite camping site, Cockatoo Island Jump on the Transport NSW website for a timetable and map and start exploring.
  7. Create a Veggie Garden: This is an experience you can share with your kids from start to finish. Let them pick out the veggies, they can plant the seeds and watch them grow. Set them the task of watering them each day and see how excited they get when they grow their first carrot or strawberry.

There are so many things that you can do outdoors and if none of the above sound like you then why not try driving to the county to go fruit picking, visiting a wildlife park or zoo, head to luna park, do the Cremorne Point walk or simply take the kids on a picnic lunch.

Outdoor activities don’t need to be elaborate, kids simply playing in their backyard or kicking a ball around the local park is sometimes all they need.
