Tips for getting your kids active these school holidays
With School Holidays, literally around the corner we know what every parent must be thinking “how am I going to keep my kids entertained?”. Well lucky for you, here at Adventure camp we have a few ideas to share with you.
We love to get kids outdoors, so coming on an outdoor Adventure with us, is always number one on our list.
Over the course of 3 days, we go sailing, take the kids through initiatives games, solve mysteries, crack codes and learn all about team work. We have stand-up paddle boarding, relay games, water games, sandcastle wars and plenty more activities to challenge your kids minds and keep them active.
But for those whose kids are a little less adventurous, we have some additional ideas that might be more up your alley:
Take the dog to a dog park: A dog park is a great way for not only your pooch to get some awesome exercise, but also for you to get active and enjoy the sunshine. Take a toy and play fetch, it is amazing how much fun you can have and the kids will love it.
Did you know, that on average kids who have a dog in the home exercise an average of 11 minutes more per day than those who don’t?
Fly a Kite: Apart from being loads of fun, there a multiple health and educational benefits of flying a kite. It gets you outside (tick), is great for the neck and stretching your spine, it reduces stress, boosts creativity and as an added bonus, it’s great for your gross motor skills. Learning to fly a kite is also good for peripheral awareness, you have to keep an eye on the kite trailing behind you as well as the ground in front of you.
Learn to cook: Okay, I know this one is not outdoors, but there are so many other benefits of teaching your kids how to cook. One being, it makes great bonding time between a parent and child, being able to make a meal boosts a kids’ confidence, it introduces them to a variety of foods and it opens their eyes to just how much effort you put in the kitchen to prepare their food. Learning to cook and follow a recipe is great for developing maths skill, reading comprehension, teaching chemistry basics and the simple art of choosing recipes educates them on culture.
Take your kids to a skate park: Some kids aren’t really into team sports and if your child feels more at home on a bike, skateboard or scooter, then maybe this option is best for you. Skateparks are fun, it is a great place to make new friends and riding around other kids is an awesome way to learn new skills. A skatepark is a great way to build resilience, persistence and self-confidence, Plus, it is a great way to keep active.
Go swimming or spend the day at the Beach: whether you are building sandcastles, wading in the water or bombing in the pool, we all know the benefits of water play for kids. Invite a friend, visit a mate’s house with a pool or if you are lucky enough to have one in your own backyard, send the kids outside for a while. There are so many ways you can have fun in the water, not to mention it is fantastic exercise and great for your body.
Let them be bored: Yep, that’s right. You could simply just let them be bored, they will use their own creativity and find ways to amuse themselves.
Lead by example: The easiest way to make sure your kids are active these holidays is to lead by example, get outdoors yourself, every chance you get. Whether it be a walk in the morning or gardening after work, the days are getting warmer and the sun is shining longer, make the most of everyday and invite your kids along.
Our instructors get super involved with the kids at camp, they see just how much fun can be had outdoors and there is not a screen in sight. We are super excited for the holidays and we hope everyone makes the most of their free time this spring.
