Why socialising is so good for our Kids

Socialising has so many benefits, and is potentially one of the most important life skills a kid can learn. Developing social skills, helps our kids be more self confident and autonomous later in life. At Adventure Camp, we challenge kids socially and place them in groups that are mixed with age, gender, friends and people they have never met before.

Throughout this blog, we are going to share a few reasons, why we think socialising is so important for our kids…

Builds confidence and independence: Socialising with others, in particular, other kids, helps to build confidence around other people and can actually make children less anxious to be outside their comfort zone. Engaging in social interactions will help children to develop self-esteem and even make engaging in new social settings less scary. Which is a particularly important skill when starting school or being placed in a new class. Having more confidence also means that your child(ren) will be more likely to take “healthy” risks, such as talking to new kids in class or trying something new.

Encourages empathy and acceptance of others: Being socially interactive, introduces your kids to new concepts and ideas, and opens their eyes to the many differences in how people think and communicate. This will also help them to develop empathy. Empathy is super important as it helps children to be kind and caring of others. They learn that other people have feelings, desires and needs just like they do. If they don’t like how someone else is treating them, they can start to realise and identify that if they treat others that same way, the other person is likely to get upset or feel hurt. When we (as adults) socialise with others of varying abilities and disabilities, we learn to accept everyone as they are right! Kids are the same, they begin to accept that everyone being different is okay and they learn to adapt play so that everyone can join in.

Communication skills: Being social, allows kids to communicate with others outside of their family and will help them to better understand social cues and how to listen and understand others. The ability to communicate comes in many forms, such as; verbal, non-verbal, facial expression and body language. Understanding and developing a variety of communication skills will help our kids as they go through different stages of their lives.

Sharing: Being egocentric and a little self-centred is normal behaviour for young children, in their minds, the world revolves around what they can see, not what they can’t see or what they can imagine. Socialising teaches kids to share and be less egocentric. Being around others encourages kids to talk, share knowledge, thoughts, resources and insights. And by sharing their stories, kids begin to grasp the concept of others.

Friends: to wrap up, socialising is the most critical aspect to help our kids make new friends and we all know just how important friends are. Friends help to increase a kids vocabulary, create meaningful connections, they open our eyes to different ways of thinking and help us to create lifelong memories. Friends are also there to rely on throughout the most crucial stages of life. Besides, who doesn’t have more fun when your friends are around!

Here at Adventure camp, we love helping kids create connections. Participating in group activities fosters teamwork, challenges individual thought patterns and allows kids to bond with each other over challenging activities.
